As a volunteer at the Seattle Symphony, you will get a unique, insider’s look at what it takes to sustain a thriving, world-class orchestra. You will also play essential role in the life of the Symphony. The following is a list of the many opportunities that await you as a Seattle Symphony volunteer.

Artist Aides

Provide transportation for guest artists to and from the airport, and from hotel to rehearsals and concerts. Interviews are conducted for these positions by Seattle Symphony staff. Artist Aides must have a good driving history and a clean vehicle in excellent condition. Volunteers must also meet minimum insurance requirements and be able to carry luggage for guest artists.

Docents

Serve as Benaroya Hall tour guides for public tours. Docent positions require one year of Seattle Symphony volunteer experience and a recommendation by a Seattle Symphony Volunteers Board member.

Education

Assist with youth and student programs like the Tiny Tots series (ages birth–5), Symphony Kids series (ages 3–5), First Concerts series (ages 3–6), Family Concerts (ages 6–11); Friday Matinee concerts (grades 9–12), and Link Up: Seattle Symphony concerts (grades 3–5). The concert season is September–June, and most shifts are Fridays and Saturdays.

Friday Matinee Bus Greeters

Volunteers warmly greet and assist seniors and school groups attending Friday matinee concerts. Friday matinees are held periodically throughout the season.

Volunteer Leadership

Lead and/or assist with implementation of volunteer programs. A leadership position is a prerequisite for serving on the Seattle Symphony Volunteers Board. A weekly time commitment and a strong dedication to the Seattle Symphony and the Seattle Symphony Volunteers organization are necessary.

Office Support

Provide essential office support to Seattle Symphony staff during regular workday hours; typically Monday–Friday, 9am–5pm. Duties include organizing and maintaining files, assisting with mailing projects, inputting computer data and helping with other clerical functions.

Special Events and Fundraising

Volunteer duties associated with events and fundraising may include addressing invitations, wrapping gifts, assisting with decor, and picking up and delivering auction items.

Symphonica, The Symphony Store

Actively promote sales, assist customers, work the register and tidy the shop. Training is required and provided. Evening and weekend hours are available to volunteers.

Ushers

Provide ushering support to supplement the regular usher staff at Seattle Symphony concerts and designated events at Benaroya Hall. Volunteer usher orientations and training are held periodically throughout the season. Training is required of all new volunteer ushers.

Simple Gifts

Assist with monthly service projects arranged by the Seattle Symphony in support of the Simple Gifts initiative. The Symphony partners with 60 local nonprofits across six sectors including youth, cultural, health services, social services, seniors, and active military and veterans. Each month, a special project in support of a different partner organization will be arranged by the Symphony, and Simple Gifts volunteers will be called upon to support the project. An example of Simple Gifts projects include donation sorting for youth support organizations, meal service at local shelters and bringing music to residents at partner organizations.

The Symphony's Simple Gifts homelessness initiative shares the inspiration of music to spark joy, alleviate trauma and connect individuals with their creativity through artistic projects, residencies and access to performances.

Surprise and Delight

This program supports the Marketing Department's Surprise and Delight initiative. The goal of this program is to greet and thank new Symphony subscribers and ensure that their experience is a positive one. Volunteers will be asked to arrive 2 hours early for a concert to be stationed at the Symphony’s Welcome Desk in the Grand Lobby. Volunteers will help greet new subscribers as they arrive at the hall, welcoming them to the season with drink vouchers. A positive, friendly attitude and customer service experience are required.

Other Opportunities

Volunteers also assist with orchestra auditions and special events like Day of Music, and fulfill many other roles in support of the Seattle Symphony.
